Earlier this year, I made the jump and started working as a freelance social media manager. It’s been a great five months, I am having so much fun and learning a lot along the way. The first couple of months I worked out of my bed, the sofa, my local library and even the nearest Costa. As I’m finally starting to get into the swing of things, I decided it is about time I sort out a workspace of my own.
We recently re-did our living room and I set aside a corner of the room for myself. I have always had little spots but never a real area and I feel like it was holding me back a little. It’s incredibly easy to go stir crazy when you’re working from home so creating a little space for yourself is important. I spent a whole Saturday perfecting my home office, it’s made such a huge difference.
I’m no longer finding it hard to focus; I feel like I’m able to get to work much quicker at my desk. There’s no distractions, everything is right where I want it and I don’t miss other offices at all. Here are five things I think everyone should have in their office.
It doesn’t matter whatever you do, I think all of us can benefit from having one of these hanging up. As a social media manager, I tend to keep a list of my clients with a breakdown of their needs on mine. Whenever I am feeling frazzled, I just look up and I’m back on track. You don’t even need to keep information on it, you could put your favourite quotes on it. White board, chalk board, cork board, the possibilities are endless.
A good office chair
No office is complete without a strong office chair. I was using one of our dining chairs for far too long and it was very distracting. If you’re not comfortable, you’re not in the right frame of mind to work. And who wants that? I personally think people should go for funky chairs but I know that’s not ideal for most office environments. I love my little pink chair, it’s so comfy and I was able to assemble it myself. It may sound daft but putting together a chair for my home office was such a boss moment for me! If you’re looking for a new office chair, why not check out Furniture@Work?
As a self-confessed stationery addict, notebooks were always going to be on this list. I have a magazine rank on my desk full of them. When I worked in an office I had a draw full of them too. Notebooks are always good to have because post-it notes are too easy to lose. You may be thinking how many notebooks does one person need? I don’t know how to answer that because I have no self-control when it comes to stationery. I have two that I use everyday (one for social media and one for blog stuff), plus loads of other stuff with inspiration or ideas I’ve jotted down that I turn to now and again.
A reminder of your achievements or something you are working towards
It doesn’t matter where your office is, this is something everyone can do. All you need is a little memento somewhere for you to look at when you’re feeling overwhelmed or sad. When I feel like this, I like to turn to what I call my blogging corner. On the right hand corner, I have my UK Blog Awards ‘Highly Commended’ certificate along with a quote that reads ‘I’m a blogger. What’s your superpower?’. Last year, Zusterschap was a runner up in the ‘Education’ category at the UK Blog Awards. It was a bittersweet achievement at the time since the blog had just come to an end as the co-founder and I went our separate ways. But now it works as a reminder and motivation for my own blog. Now Zusterschap is no longer publishing, I am ready to focus on Cattitude & Co 2.0. With a relaunch planned for early next year, this corner is doing wonders for me. My blog has made it through to the public voting round this year, if you want to vote for me you can here.
I guess this last one only really applies for home offices, but I am obsessed with buying prints. Not only are you supporting small shops and independent sellers, you’ll never feel uninspired again. My home office is plastered with artwork of cats and feminism, so it’s very on brand and keeps me motivated.
This is a collaborative post, but all opinions are my own.
What do you keep in your office?
