Halloween is merely days away and I’m super excited to be staying in for it this year. Don’t get me wrong, I live for Halloween. It’s my Christmas. Almost every year, I get dressed up, as scary as I can, and go to some sort of club night. However after last year’s particularly overwhelming night out, I’ve decided to stay in and have the ultimate Halloween night in and you can too.
Step One: Get your screen(s) sorted
As a total cinephile, my perfect Halloween night obviously includes a horror movie marathon. Friday – Monday of Halloween weekend, I’ll be watching an unhealthy amount of horror movies and tv specials. The most vital component here is your screen setup, whether it’s a computer screen, your tablet or a 4K TV*, it needs to be secured and tested in advance. There’s nothing more disappointing than learning a screen/device doesn’t work just moments before embarking on your perfect Halloween weekend.
Step Two: Get a play queue going
Have you got your viewing stations set-up? Okay good! Now to sort out your content. If you want to avoid moving at all costs, I recommend using streaming services such as Netflix or Amazon prime for example. That way you can stream without moving for hours! Can’t decide what to watch? Never fear, there’s a great little website called Letterboxd that features a ton of Halloween/Horror movie lists.
Step Three: Have an activity ready
Want something to distract you during the scary parts? Something to do in between movies? It’s Halloween, get creative and carve some pumpkins.
Step Four: Get your snack on
No marathon is complete without snacks and lots of them. If you followed step three, you will have seeds and pumpkin goo to work with! Last year I made tombstone cupcakes and I can feel them becoming a tradition.
Step Five: Follow the rules
If you’re staying in, you better follow the slasher rules.
- Don’t have sex, don’t take drugs and don’t drink alcohol
- Never say “I’ll be right back” or “this sort of thing only happens in the movies“
- Ignore mysterious noises coming from the next room and never go anywhere alone
- Never assume the killer is dead

Follow all these steps and you’ll have the perfect Halloween night in!
