In case you missed it, in May I posted my one month vegan update. This second update is probably overdue, I feel like so much has happened since the first. I’ve been having a lot of fun, here are some things I’ve been doing…
Found a new favourite pizza combo
When I first thought about going vegan, pizza/cheese was one of my biggest concerns. In our first week or so, we discovered Village Pizza have a whole range of vegan options and deliver to us. Not only is the pizza super tasty, I’ve also noticed it’s a lot easier to digest. As much as I loved cheesey pizza, it didn’t agree with my body. In fact, dairy in general doesn’t really. I can now finish my pizzas in one sitting interestingly enough. We’ve been adding these pizza bases to our food shop every so often (especially when there’s a period on the way) and experimenting with different toppings.
My favourite combo right now is: spinach, falafel, sweetcorn and pesto. It’s so good!
I met some awesome vegan babes!
A couple of weeks ago, I was invited to B. Makeup’s relaunch event in Shoreditch. I very rarely go to blogger events that aren’t client’s and it was so much fun. All of the food was vegan, I got to check out some new products before they hit the stores, and I also met some lovely Internet people! There were some bloggers there who I have been following/talking to for over a year and it was so great to finally meet them. I also met some gorgeous new cruelty-free content creators too. I’ve only recently gotten back into creating content myself, so it was a lovely re-introduction and reminder that this industry isn’t so bad! There was also some amazing vegan donuts there too and now I want to try all of them.
I also left the event with a goodie bag and was pretty impressed with all the products I tried. Finding vegan cosmetics seems to be becoming easier.
I got a hair routine in place and almost all of the products are cruelty-free
As you may have already noticed, I recently dyed my hair. During the first month, I trialled some products whilst trying to maintain it. I’m pleased to tell you that it’s been quite easy to maintain! Changing my hair has helped me mentally, especially now I have a routine in place. I thought all of my products were both cruelty-free and vegan, but it turns out they’re just vegan.
Not all products are both! They can be cruelty-free and not vegan, normally down to ingredients. For example, a favourite cruelty-free face mask of mine has honey in it. In the same respect, a product could have vegan-friendly ingredients but isn’t cruelty-free elsewhere. After plugging a post on Twitter, a couple of people revealed that Batiste isn’t actually cruelty-free!
Batiste isn’t cruelty free I’m afraid. China is one of it’s largest markets 😔

Vegan yes but cf no, they use a fake bunny logo and actually sell in china x

It turns out they sell in China and use a fake bunny logo, which tricks people (like me!) into thinking they are leaping bunny approved. Sneaky! The good news is Superdrug have some of their own (if parent companies don’t bug you).
My favourite hair product I’ve discovered has definitely been Faith in Nature’s BB Norish shampoo and conditioner. The cheapest place I’ve found it is Superdrug’s online store. I also recently picked up some of their coconut range in my local Oxfam.
My opinions keep changing on parent companies
Surprise surprise, I’m still conflicted! Although I recently made the decision to avoid brands that are owned by L’Oréal altogether, I’m still making my mind up elsewhere. At the moment, it seems like I’m making my mind up on a case by case basis. I’m not saying it’s right, but it’s just where I’m at right now. I think it’s because I’m still making my way through a lot of products that I can’t donate (too used).
If I’m looking at new products, I do make a conscious effort to look for brands that are cruelty-free, vegan, and not owned by a parent company that tests. However if a brand does seem to geniunely be making strides/actually care, I’m happy to support. I guess the biggest example of this would be Superdrug. I love their stuff and I was really impressed at their event. They’re owned by a parent company that tests on animals but most of their stuff is leaping bunny approved and vegan-friendly. They’re the only exception I’m making right now. A friend of mine recently said that if it’s leaping bunny approved, it’s good enough for her. I think this is a good way of thinking if you’re trying to get into buying cruelty-free products!
(HEART)BREAKING NEWS 💔 19/06/2017 Unilever to acquire Hourglass — “Unilever announced today that it has signed an agreement to acquire Hourglass, the luxury colour cosmetics brand.” 😔 It’s sad to hear a cruelty-free brand is being bought out by a corporation that continues to test on animals. Not sure what this will mean for Hourglass and if they’ll remain to be cruelty-free after this acquisition.
There’s been some interesting developments in the cosmetics world
The good news is that The Body Shop has been sold to a Brazilian cruelty-free brand Natura! This means everyone who avoided them due to being owned by L’Oréal can start shopping there again. I’m not entirely sure when the sale goes through, but I’m so happy. I stopped shopping there and felt bad whilst trying to use up what’s left of them.
In other not so great news, Unilever have acquired Hourglass! It kind of feels like we’ve had a victory followed by a loss. Hopefully this isn’t the way the industry is headed!
I’ve been trying more vegan snacks
Remember our love affair with jackfruit? We discovered one of our local corner shop stocks it and it’s pretty cheap too! It’s like £1 or so for a tin. We want to throw a BBQ this Summer, so I’m very excited by this. Jackfruit burgers for all!
I also recently worked with Doisy & Dam. They were kind enough to send me a range of their chocolate; I tried the vegan options and shared the non-vegan stuff with my family. Safe to say, we’re all in love with it!
I’m also on a mission to try out more vegan restaurants/vegan options when I can, the most recent one was Leon and it was very nice!
